Ideas For Making Money From Home

I admire you for wanting to make money from home. It says you want to take control of your life. When you work in a job, someone else, like your boss, and the corporation, controls you during work hours.

A boss told me once that when I reported to work, they owned me. The way he said it made me feel like a slave. I felt I was the property of the company. Everything I did at work had to be to serve the company.

Now that is fair. After all, the company is paying you for your time. But, you can still be made to feel a valuable member of their work force. Sadly, that doesn’t happen very often.

Since I was an employee, it was not my job to decide what I should do. I would be given instructions that are part of a bigger plan that I had to follow. Not only that, I had to meet deadlines. And if I didn’t, I would be held accountable.

Being Accountable

This can be scary when someone else decides what you have to do. But when you work at home for yourself, being accountable is a whole different ballgame. You are the worker AND the boss. Hence, you are accountable to yourself.

That is a good thing. But also a bit scary. It is up to you to decide what you do to make your home based business make money. I have a question.

Do you want a home based business to supplement a full time job? Or is your desire to make this your sole source of income? If it is the former, then you have some breathing room. If it is the latter, you have almost none.

Have you heard the saying, “If it’s to be it’s up to me!” You must give it some serious thinking.

Recommendation

Do not make your home based business your sole source of income unless you have

  • a large amount of savings to draw on until your home based business can earn sufficient income to meet your living expenses,
  • retired and collecting retirement income and social security,

Now that we have got that cleared, let’s look at a few ideas for making money from home. Keep in mind that if you are doing this while holding a full time job it will take you longer to meet your financial goals compared to working it full time.

Options

Instead of discussing a laundry list of opportunities I want to narrow the list of ideas down to the following 10 ideas. If you have other ideas, please include those yourself. First I shall list the ideas. Then I shall discuss them briefly.

You will notice that they all have one common factor. No matter how great your idea or product is, you need to find customers who are willing to check them out and make a purchase.

You have the option of using old school methods to find your customers such as advertising in newspapers, stores, magazines. Or you can use the internet to promote your business. In some cases a combination of both would be necessary.

At the end I shall give you my recommendation as to what businesses I feel are the best options, as well as the reasons why.

Finally, I will describe how you can use the Internet to market your business, no matter what it is. Let’s dig in to some ideas for making money from home!

Home Based Businesses For Your Consideration

  1. Self made products
  2. Copywriting
  3. Graphic design
  4. Web designer
  5. Book keeping
  6. Tax preparation
  7. App designer
  8. Resume writing
  9. Network Marketing
  10. Affiliate Marketing

There are a whole range of other businesses that you can operate from home but require you to get out of the house. These include, driving for Uber and Lyft. Freelance photography. Video production. I will not be covering home based businesses that require you to leave your home. By all means, consider those kinds if you have a late model car to drive for Uber, or the equipment and skills to take professional grade pictures and videos.

I have categorized the home based businesses into two categories. Hard and Soft.

Businesses that require materials to make products, such as arts and crafts, food items like jams and jellies are what I call hard products. The 1st item in the list falls into this category.

All the others I consider soft products. There are no physical items you need to deal with. They can be either digital, such as items 2 to 8, or products and services you market for others, like in 9 and 10.

Since the plan is to make money from home, they would all require the use of the Internet. Where do you start? All would need a website. Let’s explore this further.

Website

You will need to create a Domain Name. Then see if it is available. And if it is, buy it right away so that someone else will not do so before you.

There are many options for registering your domain name, as well as hosting it, for a fee. Go Daddy and Blue Host are two well-known ones. They are both fine if all you need to do is purchase a domain name, create a website and have it hosted.

Ask yourself, will taking these actions alone generate traffic to your website and help you to generate sales? What do you think?

I don’t think so. Creating a business to make money from home is an art and a science. The art applies to the creation of your website in a manner that will provide a high quality user experience. The science applies to the technical aspects of using online tools like Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to insure you get a lot of traffic.

You may be surprised to learn that SEO not only requires tools like Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Bing Webmaster Tools to do the technical stuff, but also how to write your Blogs and arrange your web pages.

Yes, Blogs! You could either design your website as a store front, and use paid adds to get your web posts ranked high in the Search Engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo, but as an alternative use Blogs to achieve similar results without ads.

Until your business generates sufficient cash flow and profit, I do not recommend using your limited funds to pay for ads. There is a time and place for ads after your business is making some money. Then you can use some of your profits for ads to scale up your business.

Your website is the key to all of this, but without paid ads, more effort is required, behind the scenes as it were to make this all work.

Fork In The Road – Decision Time!

You will have to decide if you want to figure out how to do all this by yourself? Or pay others to do this for you.

I recommend you do this by yourself. But not in a vacuum. I invite you to check out how I learned to do this by myself, but with intensive, high quality and low cost training. The curtains are lifted in this article I wrote about my highly rated recommendation:

The Best Training In Affiliate Marketing That Turns Beginners Into Pros!

The training taught me how to build my website to specifically create a successful business. I learned the tricks of the trade to rank my Blogs high on the search engines.

My recommendation is to go this route. You can check it out for free at the end of the article, and then decide if this is right for you.

My Recommendation

My best recommendation is to start an Affiliate Marketing Home Based Business. Affiliate Marketing, according to Wikipedia, dates back to before the Internet became commonplace in 1994. Here are my main reasons:

  1. Little or no start up costs
  2. Little or no overhead
  3. No inventory required
  4. You don’t need employees
  5. Totally online based
  6. Short learning curve
  7. It is possible to start earning an income in a few months
  8. Access to expert advice when needed, for free
  9. Easily scalable
  10. Option to provide residual income

In fact, I wrote a Blog, What Is The Best Home Based Business that discusses all these points in detail. I suggest clicking the link to get the crucial information you need. While on that site, please click the links provided that will give you supporting information. Before you review the Network Marketing business, I suggest you do this first. Your comments on that topic after you read the Blog are most welcome.

My second recommendation is how to start a Network Marketing Home Based Business using exclusively online techniques. The Federal Trade Commission provides helpful information on what constitutes a legal Network Marketing company, and to notice the red flags of those that are illegal, and  operate like a Ponzi (Pyramid) Scheme. I completely support what the FTC states. The company I am involved with does indeed meet the FTC requirements of a legal entity.

Why Network Marketing? It is one of the best businesses to create a stream of residual income. But it does require a lot of hard work to build a team of associates all working together. It is not for everyone The allure is, it keeps providing you with an income even when you are absent like having to walk away for health reasons. This is the main benefit of residual income. You can leave this business that keeps generating money, as a legacy for your heirs.

Not all Network Marketing companies are created equal. You need to do your homework to find out if the company has a legitimate product, that is competitively priced. It must have solid management that operates with integrity. The company must also have several years of positive track records. Its compensation plan must be easy to understand and it pays fairly.

You can research Network Marketing companies on Google.

Parting Thoughts

We live in an age with amazing opportunities.

Unlike helping shareholders of corporations get rich by working in a job, or making your boss wealthy in a private company, you can use a fraction of that effort to create an online asset that will pay you more than you ever imagined. Unlike the other home based businesses, Affiliate Marketing and can be started part time. It only takes a couple of hours a day.

Isn’t it worth your time to learn everything you can on how to make this work? I am giving you this opportunity. You have a decision to make if this is worth pursuing. If you decide making money from home is not right for you, that is OK. We can still be friends.

I wish you all the very best in life.

Your friend.

Hi Edwin thank you so much for providing this informative post. I think that a lot of people have the misconception of working from home. Although it’s very nice to have that financial freedom it also takes a lot of time and effort into creating an online business. I absolutely love the Wealthy Affiliate program it has helped me with my freelance in career tremendously and I will recommend it to anybody and everybody thank you so much for this post.

  2. I really like this. I think it sets a good precedent that you are so open and upfront about the process of creating a successful business and the time it will realistically take.

How long does it take to start earning substantial income which could replace a minimum wage job? In this case it would have to fit around said job.

Do you have any tips on things to avoid when getting started in the world of online business?

I think working online is fantastic as it is so accessible and anyone can learn how to achieve success even if they have no prior experience or lack computer skills.

Hi Alex, I appreciate your thoughtful comments. Any website based business needs to play the Google game in order to succeed. Google is very fussy on giving out high rankings. Their priority is to promote websites that attract visitors and keep them engaged. Until you have at least 36 Blogs, traffic will be limited. Your Blogs need to provide valuable information. Like giving great unbiased reviews on products and services. In 4-6 months you can expect a few sales. From 6-12 months growth accelerates. After one to two years most people are able to do well enough to do this full time. That is when you can pay for ads and scale up your earnings. So growth is asymptotic. I hope this answers your question. Cheers! Edwin

Great post.  Well thought out and helpful.  I can sense your concern for the audience to understand network marketing.  You explained it well.  I clicked on a couple links to make sure they worked, which they did.

Jay told us to have a contact me page, which I have yet to do, because I don’t know whick Widget to use.  It wasn’t in the training.

Good layout, good use of links and images.

    Best!

    1. Edwin Bernard

Hi Barbara, I liked your response. Thanks for bringing up the contact page option. The way I do it is in using the banners available through my $ icon at the top. I can add banners and active links within my post for visitors to connect to me in Wealthy Affiliate. Is that what you were talking about? If I misunderstood, please clarify your statement to me. Thanks! Cheers. Edwin

  4. I like your take on network marketing. Now dese days Network marketing and MLM have a bad name as if all the companies are scams. Like with everything in life there are some bad apples here and there but I still believe it’s a working business model. Like with affiliate marketing you get paid for the things you endorse. And why not?

For example, with your company, LegalShield, I’m pretty sure that if you are happy with the services, you still would have recommended it to everyone who needs it for free. Why not get paid, for it if it’s possible?

    1. Edwin Bernard

Hi Nikeze, I like your comments. And yes, I get paid in LegalShield for the subscriptions my immediate customers make. And if they become associates, there is a sliding scale where I earn commissions on the customers they bring in who also subscribe. Each associate need only make a few sales per month for the program to work quite well. Hence, an associate needs to play a coaching role as well.

In Affiliate Marketing your earnings are dependent only on your efforts. So you have to work harder to get more personal sales.

I wish you much success in your online business.

      Cheers!

      Edwin

  5. Good Day, Edwin.

I can relate to what you have said in your post.  Especially about being a valued member of the workforce.  In one job that I had for 11 years, I was paid well but I kind of felt like a slave.  In another job, I felt valued beyond words because I took pride in the work I was doing and the managers always told me how much they appreciated it but, I don’t think the company understands the concept of paying someone what they are worth.  Their pay scale was very low.

As far as accountability goes,  there was plenty in the first and not much in the second.  That’s Is an essential part of being a good employee whether it’s in a J.O.B. or working from home.

I have heard that saying and I am in total agreement.  Anyone who wants to work from home should have this posted in big letters on the wall right in front of them.  I have that on my wall along with another that says, “If nothing ever changes, nothing ever changes”.

I have everything that you mention here.  A website, content (not enough yet) and the best training but, the one thing I lack and am now at your “Fork in the Road” is the decision to knuckle down or totally back away.  The latter is not an option, the former is the direction I must choose.

I have written about the accountability part of this post because it doesn’t matter if one has all the other stuff.  If they are not willing to commit, dare I say 100%, to the process it’s NOT going to work.  I cannot emphasize that enough.

I am retired now.  There are no more excuses.

    Your recommendation rocks,

    Wayne

Hello Wayne, thank you for a candid and heartfelt response. There is one component that I didn’t mention. Faith. In order to have faith, trust must be there first. I trust the WA methods so much. Many members who I know who have succeeded, just followed the program and implemented what they were taught. My sponsor is one of them.

He joined in October 2015 and is now earning $8000 a month from just one website. He promotes WA exclusively. But he provides great value on his website by researching other opportunities that make enticing claims, and gives reviews on them. Of course, he shows how they are either scams, or legitimate ways to scalp money from eager people.

Then he provides the magic WA formula to them. The join for free and no credit card needed approach. And that works!

He found me on an investment forum where people share their experiences good and bad about companies that provide investment research reports at varying fees. They range from $19.99 a month to $1999.99 a year, and even more. They have a chat forum and he noticed me asking questions. And that is how he engaged me and told me about WA. I am so glad he did.

Does that give you some ideas?

I wish you all the best.

      Cheers!

      Edwin

  6. Yes, and thanks for the encouragement. Almost sounds like the fella I signed up through although I know there are others that are doing a bang up job of letting those who are looking for ways to make money online, the heads up about the good stuff and the bad stuff.

I am so glad that I was able to avoid the bad stuff during my online search. I came across a lot of it but it just didn’t sit right in my gut. I didn’t know why but after joining up With WA I have learned enough that I stay away from them as far as I can get except when writing my own reviews.

Thanks again. Your comments are encouraging to me.

    Moving Forward,
    Wayne
